In August I had the distinct pleasure of meeting an extraordinary woman. That woman, Erica Pimentel, spoke at the 2008 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer kickoff breakfast at JW Marriott in Summerlin. Her story of battling breast cancer, the subsequent loss of her baby, the unwavering support of her husband and son, and the return of cancer a second time caused me and most gathered that morning to dab tissues at unbidden tears.
Looking at those seated at the head table, it was impossible to guess that
this young, healthy-looking woman in her mid-twenties would be speaking as a
breast cancer survivor. And, that this same woman was awaiting her next round of treatment and anticipating the likely loss of her long brown hair – for the second time in as many years. You’ve heard the saying “you can’t judge a book by its cover” and Erica is proof of it. She explained these were just the first two chapters of her life. In the third chapter she foresees dancing at her now young son’s wedding some distant day in the future.
Next month, we’ll celebrate Erica’s life and that of all breast cancer survivors
and share the inspiration of these courageous women. You can participate
by signing up for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast
Cancer Walk set for Saturday, Oct. 4. Go to www.americancancersociety.org/makingstrides to learn more.
This month, take inspiration from three young Summerlin athletes. These high school students trained at the Olympic Training Camp in Colorado this summer as they prepared for international competition. Then, be ready for the wonder of the Summerlin Arts Festival. We tell you when and what to expect at this year’s event in our Your Town section. Continue to be awed by our Spaces section where we showcase One Queensridge Place. These high-rise luxury towers are, in a word, magnificent.
So, while I hope you enjoy our cover, please don’t judge our book by it. Instead, turn the pages and find out what's inside.
Happy reading.
P.S. Each September we offer area dentists an opportunity to share what sets their dental practice apart. Read the profiles about these dedicated dentists and what they have to offer. It’s their support, and the support of all of our advertisers, that keeps our magazine coming to your home each month at no cost to you.
